About Ned
The short version
Actor first, magician eventually, and a lifelong student of things that refuse to behave.
I've spent most of my working life in front of audiences.
My training is in classical acting, with a Master's from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, and a career that ran through theatre, film, television, and voice work.
Magic started as an interest and quietly took over. Not because I wanted to fool anybody. There are easier ways to do that. What caught me was the moment after the applause, when somebody says quietly, “That doesn't make any sense,” and means it.
That's the moment I chase.
What the acting gives me is everything that happens between the tricks. I know how to hold a room, how to let a silence sit, and how to talk to an audience like they're adults instead of announcing myself at them. The method matters, but the method isn't the show. The show is what it feels like to be in the room.
I work mainly in mentalism, with some illusion, and material that sometimes goes somewhere stranger than either. It's magic that happens to the people watching rather than to a prop on a table.
I'm a member of the Academy of Magical Arts and the International Brotherhood of Magicians. When I'm not performing I'm usually reading, building something, or taking an idea apart to see whether it goes back together better.
