An evening around a table

The Séance

There was a stretch of about fifty years when the most interesting thing you could do after dinner was put out the lights and see who turned up.

They did it in ordinary houses, at ordinary tables, among people who had eaten together an hour before. Not in temples, not in robes. In dining rooms, by candlelight, because it was the best idea anyone had for an evening.

Then it stopped, and nothing took its place.

I bring the candles. Your guests bring their hands. The rest of it arrives on its own.

The evening

An evening's entertainment. A séance, in your own home, for an hour or so. The room is lit by candle and seats exactly as many as your table does, and every one of them sits in the circle. There are no spectators here. It is not an evening for the faint of heart, and it is certainly not one for children.
